How much does Lasik/ Laser vision correction cost?

I recently won a raffle for a free laser surgery, they are sending me a certificate for $1000. I’m pretty sure that it is going to cost more than that for both eyes. I know is is more expensive the worse your vision. I have -5.15 apx. in both eyes, no Astigmitism. Can anyone tell me how much it cost you? Please no, ”… I’d guess its about $xxx…” and I’m not going to fly to India to have it done. Thanks in advance to all of you who help.
I know to research the place and check it out before I commit to anything. I’ve looked online for costs, but everything I find says I’d need a consultation. I have one scheduled with this place on July 12th, and I’d like to have an idea before going in. I just want a ball- park number from people who have had it done.

My PRK custom wavefront cost me $3400 after my vision discount. The other quotes I got in my area was $4200 and $3000. (and I totally hear ya on the India thing!!)

The Standard Lasik ranged according to the technology used, but for the broad beam technology, the price was about $1000, flying spot was $1300 and the custom without any discounts was $1900.

Actually, the expense isn’t necessarily how bad your correction is…for my surgeon, he charges by the technology used…and it’s a flat rate per technology. And for the other two surgeons I looked into they had flat rates as well, but didn’t have the different technologies available.

Some health insurance companies also have some type of “rewards” system that might help with a discount if the surgeon you go to will accept it (some companies will have a contract with that surgeon…not that it will be covered and paid for…just you’ll get a discount if you have a certain insurance).

I’d say that the $1000 certificate is a great prize! judging on my research, the US average per eye was $1200-2100…which with your prize, you’ll have at LEAST 1/3 paid for. congrats!

Opinions on Laser Eye Surgery?

I was thinking about getting laser eye surgery to correct my vision. I do want to get it… but then I don’t. I understand the chances of going completely blind are quite small, but I think it’s a hell of a risk to take. I know so many people have gotten it done, but I would appreciate opinions of those who have, or even those who know about the procedure. And most importantly, has any doctor determined what will happen in the future? If the correction will remain or if the person can have complications? Please serious thoughts and opinions only.

In my opinion I would only get the surgery if it was absolutely needed, say for a job that required good vision and you couldn’t wear glasses safely.
Even though going blind is a small risk there’s a lot of other problems like decreased night vision, problems with glare, etc.
Plus it hasn’t been around long enough to gauge the long term effects.
Also, skills vary so if I was going to do it I would find a doctor who only does laser surgery and get a lot of recommendations.
If they’re any good they will provide references.
Good Luck.

Can someone with amblyopia (lazy eye) ever be free of glasses? Can they successfully get Lasik Surgery?

If your lazy eye is able to be corrected with contacts or glasses then LASIK will most likely be able to correct you to what your glasses are able to correct you to. If your best corrected vision is say 20/40 in glasses then that is probably the Best Lasik will get you. THe same if your eyes can see 20/20 in glasses. Some people with a lazy eye can not be corrected at all ( my daughter has one lazy eye and cant see any better with glasses.) As far as correcting the lazy eye, physically, even if you had lasik and didn’t need glasses to see your eye would still be turned, ( if your eye does turn in/out) so I have seen many patients who are not completely happy After Lasik because they no longer have the glasses to make their eye look normal. ( not turned in or out) Depending on your age only muscle surgery can correct that.

I live in australia, so I can’t tell you where to go, But I can tell you that most people can be helped to have better sight using laser surgery, But not all. In Australia, the eye specialist will give a comprehensive testing of your eyes in order to ascertain if the laser surgery can help you, then you can decide if you want to go ahead with it or not.

Average Cost of Lasik?

I’m looking to Get Lasik done in the next year…my vision is fairly decent … – .79 is my worst eye… anyone know what the average price should be around for Custom Lasik? I’m in the NE ohio region if that helps. The people I’ve spoken with have all had terrible vision so I’m wondering if it helps that mine is not.

Thanks!

Some national chains advertise Lasik Prices as low at $299 an eye, but a look at the financial reports of those same chains will find that the average Lasik Cost is about $1,350 per eye. The price of Lasik varies from about $1,400 to $2,900 per eye, depending on the surgeon and technology, according to St. Louis research firm Market Scope.

http://www.usaeyes.org/lasik/faq/lasik-cost-price.htm

I work for a nonprofit Lasik patient advocacy organization. We do not provide Lasik, just Lasik Information and we certify Lasik Doctors‘ patient outcomes.

If your refractive error is – 0.79 then you may want to reconsider having Lasik. The most you can expect from Lasik is the convenience of a reduced need for corrective lenses. This is such a small refractive error that you probably function well without glasses and would not receive much benefit from a reduced need for corrective lenses, but you would be subject to all the risks of elective surgery.

If you are serious about vision correction surgery you should consider PRK, LASEK, or Epi-Lasik as alternatives to Lasik. Also, you may want to consider a NE Ohio Lasik doctor whose patient outcomes have been certified by our organization.

Laser Treat for Eye ?

Hii, Iam 24 and i have longsight. I heard about laser traetment to eye, Is that safe for eye and useful. Can i go without glasses. Please give some information

Yes it is safe, but after getting it, you will need to detox the eye of the interference field it generates. This can be done easily with the right instructions. You will not need glasses after this is done.

The procedure does cut the lubricant pathways in the eye, but they seem to repair. This will give you a period of several months of dry eyes, but using eye drops fixes this problem. The new software eliminates the “shadowing” effect that was previously associated with this procedure. Be sure to ask the doctor if he is using the latest, greatest software.

At 24, your eyes have pretty much stabilized enough for the procedure. It is painless and quick. It only takes a few seconds starring at a red light to complete the procedure.

good luck

… I’ve never heard that before. I tried looking it up and I found this:

http://www.docshop.com/2006/07/20/hastings

From reading this I don’t really think it matters. Since everyone does have different shaped and size of eyes, I don’t think it matters if you’re asian.

Extreme near-sightedness help?

ok so, I’m 15 and my vision is TERRIBLE! I have not heard of a person who’s vision is worse than me. My eyesight is around -5.50 in both eyes. I really hate being so dependent on contacts and glasses. I want to do Lasik Eye Surgery but I’m too young. Can I have LASIK if I get my parent’s permission? Also, is there a point where your vision is too bad for surgery to help? My eyesight is getting worse and worse and I’m afraid I’ll eventually go blind if I don’t do something. I’m sooo embarresed by my near-sightedness, I feel blind. Help please?

You have moderate myopia. Lots of people have worse myopia than you.

You should be at least 18 and have not had an increase in myopia for two years to have LASIK. LASIK works up to about -7.00 to -9.00 depending on corneal thickness.

You cannot go blind from needing glasses, blindness is caused by disease or trauma.

Chill. There is no reason to be embarrassed. Be thankful that you can see well with glasses.

Eye corrective surgery (Lasik, Lasek, PRK)?

I have several questions about it. First of all i did some looking around and i think my eye sight is about 20/350 or so. This is based off the prescription of my contacts. can anyone confirm or correct it?
This is how it looks on the package

8.6/14.4
-3.75 -1.75 x030

I am near sighted and have an astigmatism

My second question is what is the safest type of surgery out there. I would rather do a surgery where it would take longer to heal/more pain present and have my eyes in better health that could be corrected if need be. And i am not really aiming for 20/20, more along the lines of 20/40. I keep hearing about different stuff like this new no-touch lasek or something.

I wouldn’t mind still having to wear glasses for reading. Its just what i do in the rest of my day that would make no glasses alot more convenient.

Any help is appreciated

I had Lasik About a month ago and very happy with it. Since everybody’s eyes are different, you should go for a free consultation or two. They will look at your eyes and tell you what methods are available to you, what is the cost and what you can except in the way of results. The place I went to guaranteed me 20/20 vision or my money back

Bad Glare & Starbursting(Non Lasik Related)?

I am suffering from severe glare, starbursting, and halos at night. I saw several eye doctors and they checked for glacoma, cateracts, eye dieses, etc and found nothing. They did state that my pupils are very large and that could be the problem. Then why is it, if I sqint or look through a pinhole the glare issues are reduced greatly. They gave me those yellow nighttime driving glasses and they do not correct the problem. It annoys me so much when I watch TV at night because the TV will have glare coming off of it. To fix that, I put 4 lamps with 42 watt, 150 watt equivalent compact fluorescent bulbs in all 4 corners of the room, just to make the room evenly lit so I don’t see starbursting and glare coming off the TV. What is wrong with my eyes, I am 20 years old and it has been like this for about 2 years.

when you squint or look through a pinhole, the amount of light entering the eye is reduced, thereby reducing the chance for glare/star-bursting. If there is nothing physically wrong, i.e., cataract, spherical abberation, etc., and you simply have a large pupil, there is nothing you can do to make it go away. You can wear a prosthetic contact lens with a black backing and smaller pupil aperture. This reduces the glare for a patient of mine who has no iris at all to block the light. Good luck to you.

my sister got hers done over 10 years ago and she hasn’t had any problems since. i think she said that the doctors told her that she may have to get each eye redone after 5 years or so but i know for sure that she hasn’t had to go in again. pretty expensive as it was “per eye” rate but she said that she was glad that she did it.
don’t know about Dr. Chris Surdykowski so i wish you the best.

Any one had lasik done at Lasik Vision Institute in Dallas?

I am thinking of going to get the procedure done there, and I know I prob need PRK, just wanted to see other peoples feedback…

I had it done 3 years ago and regret not doing more research on it. The people who were teaching me about it were dressed like doctors, but they were obviously paid to be sells people. Being nieve I took their word for it.

After the surgery I was having problems with dry eyes, eye pains, migraines, and strabismus. When I confronted them about it everything didn’t add up so I started doing my own research online and talked to two local optomatrist.

What I found out is that Lasik Surgery has only been arround for a few years and nobody knows what the long term affects are. Also no matter who does the surgery and what technology they use, you will always end up with scar tissue on the muscles arround the eye, which can cause problems. Also the fact they try to minimize so you don’t think its a big deal is that every person is taking a risk of losing their eye sight and/or life.

Everybody there kept telling me that I was a perfect candidate for the surgery. Later I found out that your not a candidate if your younger than 25 because thats when your eye sight will have stabilized. I was 20 when they told me that I was the perfect candidate.

And take into consideration I paid over $5k to get it done at the most experienced lasiks surgeon in the world, with the latest technology. (Dr. Boothe in Dallas)

Bottom line is Your body is even more important than your car or your house. Get several unbiased opinions and do your homework. There are other options to improve your eye sight naturally and with less risk and WAY less money.

Have you ever had Lasik Eye Surgery?

can you tell me about it? what to expect? are you glad you did it? if you knew then what you know now, would you do it over again? how long is the surgery, the recovery and is your eyesight REALLY better?

thank you.

With a little research, both promoters who think “LASIK is the best thing I ever did in my life,” and detractors who feel that “LASIK ruined my life,” can be found online. The question is “What can be done to stack the odds in one’s favor?”

In general I recommend avoiding the “LASIK in a box” centers. As with most things in life you will generally get what you pay for: the more experienced surgeons with the more advanced technology will charge more for LASIK. These are your eyes, don’t cheap out on your vision. It’s one thing if you buy a cheap LCD TV and the pixels go bad – you can take it back and exchange it for a new one. But if you have a bad outcome with eye surgery you’re stuck with that for life.

Probably the most important decision someone who is considering LASIK must make is what surgeon to choose. Although I do not perform LASIK, I have created a document for my cataract patients to help them in choosing a surgeon. The article can be viewed by clicking this link:

http://sgveye.com/en/resources/35-about-your-eyes/233-10-things-you-must-know-before-choosing-your-cataract-surgeon

The advice in this document can be applied to choosing any surgeon in any specialty, not just cataract surgeons.

Has anybody had the Laser Eye Surgery done at Lasik Vision Institute in Rancho Cordova?

I went for a consultation a few weeks ago and the office seemed very clean and everyone was very nice and very thorough with the explanations and so i have an appt for Thursday and im very nervous, has anyone gone here before? i read somethings about scams and bad service but those were mostly in Florida and some other states but i couldn’t find anyone who had it done i this specific location. or any info or experiences about this specific clinic? Please! i am scared now…

If you are scared, cancel the appointment until you can get more information. Although the Rancho Cordova Lasik Vision Institute does have a website, I could find no independent patient reviews. This is both good and bad. People who have had unpleasant experiences or bad surgical outcomes are more likely to post complaints than those that don’t, but not finding any reviews does concern me. If you know the name of your Lasik Surgeon, you can try googling “his/her name MD and Rancho Cordova” and see the individual surgeon has any patient reviews.

Were your eyes examined by your Lasik surgeon and were you assured you that you are a good candidate for this procedure?
Has the Institute discussed all the risks and side effects that could result from this procedure?
Has the procedure and post surgical care been fully explained to you?

If any of the above were not covered during your consultation, I would be leary of going through with the surgery.

You cannot have this surgery until your vision has stabilized and it is safest if has been stabilized for two years. Vision usually stabilizes in your early to mid twenties. Having the surgery before total vision stabilization will result in your having undergo the surgery again at a later time.

Most people having Lasik Surgery have satisfactory to excellent results, but the less than 5% that don’t can suffer irreversible vision problems including severe vision loss. I hope you have thoroughly researched the Vision Corrective Laser Procedure that the clinic will preform on your eyes and checked out the Lasik surgeon.

Can I wear RGP contacts?

Hi,
I have very serious astigmatism ( -4.5 in my left eye and -2.5 in my right) and absolutely no myopia nor hyperopia. Can I wear RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable) contact lenses? And will I have to get them custom made?
Also, are RGP contacts comfortable and effective?

PS – Lasik Surgery is not an option as I am not of age yet.
I did. But he didn’t cover the topic very well.

Yes, you should be able to wear RGP lenses with your prescription. They are not as comfortable as soft lenses but once they are fitted correctly your eyes will adapt to the sensation after a while.

Whether you will need to get them custom made depends on the shape of your cornea. If you felt your optician did not supply you with enough information on these lenses, then go to see another optician who will be able to take the relevant measurements and give you more information on the lens that you will need to be fitted with

Breast augmentation before wedding…?

I’ve been wanting to get a breast enlargement for years and years. Recently I’ve spent a lot of money on lasik and on fixing my car but I still want to try to get it done soon. If I get enough money, how long before my wedding would be a good time? Does it need to be 6 months or more before so I’m comfortable and healed or is healing fairly quick? I just want to be full speed for our great honeymoon in Hawaii!!

I’d recommend at least 6 months worth of recovery time. Even if you heal quickly and are feeling great, scars (if they’re visible) can take time to fade, and sometimes things go wrong (not to freak you out or anything…but crap DOES happen on occasion) and you would want a cushion of time in the event that something needs corrected or repaired. As well, the surgery site may be tender for quite some time, so you would want an adequate amount of time to heal COMPLETELY (inside and out) before smashing yourself into a wedding gown and romping around on the beaches and whatever.

How can I improve my eyesight?

I recently got my glasses and I have myopia (near sightedness). My power is really small just about -0.25 and the doctor suggested me to wear glasses whenever I copy notes from board in class. He said it because I couldnt read (focus) things on the board immediately after looking at my notebook . Myopia runs in the family (except my mom who is far-sighted). The doc told me that the power will incease but I dont want it to because wearing glasses irritates my nose. Any suggestions will be welcomed. (please dont tell extreme procedures like lasik and stuff)

Laser Lasik Eye Surgery long term effects?

I have been thinking about going for Laser Eye Surgery, my vision is like 4 and 4.50. I used to wear contacts all the time, until my eyes got very dry and now I can’t even wear a contact in my right eye – it hurts when I am taking it out and the contact stuck to my eye. I would like to know if there are any long term bad effects after Laser eye surgery, e.g. will my vision worsen in the future as I’m now only 24, and what happens if I suffer cataracts when I’m old? Am I still able to have another eye surgery to fix that problem? Also, has anyone had such a problem with contacts being stuck to the eye and being very painful to remove?? I mentioned it to my optometrist and she said my right eye was severely dry. But even after resting my eyes by not wearing contacts & wearing only glasses for a few months, when I tried wearing my contacts again, I could hardly wear it in my right eye for more than 1 hr.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Lasik eye surgery is very safe nowadays. My cousin got her dental implants and Lasik Surgery in India by a company called Indian Health Guru Consultants. The Price for dental and Lasik surgery is very less in India. She paid 25% of the price she was quoted in America.

Indian Health Guru Consultants is very famous in India They arrange Dental surgery, jaw surgery, Lasik eye surgery, Dental Implants etc for foreign patients in India. I read a lot about them in the Newspapers and magazines- about their patient stories.
They arrange financing for USA, Canadian, UK and other international patients who plan to have surgery abroad for low cost, as dental and eye surgery is not covered by insurance. They also have photos pasted of their International patients. You can checkout their website. There are huge cost savings. As a doctor I personally believe that surgery can be easily handled in India, as the quality of healthcare available In India is simply best in the world. The surgeons are USA/UK trained and facilities are 5 star.

Can an optometrist with contact lens knowledge please advise me?

Question Details: I slept in contacts for days or weeks at a time for many years and would wake up with gunk all the time. 2 times my eyes were badly infected and i had to administer this type of eye steroid after becoming very sensitive to light. My eyes over the years have become increasingly dry. I have finally reached a point where i’m being responsible for my contacts take them out every night. 2 times i accidentally fell asleep out of exhaustion and when i woke up they were in very bad condition. Now when i put them in in the morning it is usually irritable unless i put brand new ones in. It feels like they’re getting a little better but here are the real questions:

1. What kind of damage is irreparable at this point?
2. How can i make sure my eyes become healthy again?
3. I have heard to have Laser Eye Surgery your eyes must be in a relatively neutral state. Is this true and if so what would i do to reach that point of eye health?

kudos for now being responsible with your eye care!

“1. What kind of damage is irreparable at this point?”

pretty much impossible to tell w/o seeing your eye. some people can regress and be 100% again, some cant. depends on what ype of lens you used to sleep in, what your Rx was at the time you were slepping in them, and your own individual physiology

“2. How can i make sure my eyes become healthy again?”

wear your lenses exactly as they were prescribed…

“3. I have heard to have laser eye surgery your eyes must be in a relatively neutral state. Is this true and if so what would i do to reach that point of eye health?”

Why does Laser Eye Correction cost so much? Per eye?!?

it costs £600 Thats over 1000 dollars.
each eye costs over £600 (over 1000 dollars)

Here’s the real story. Way back when laser was first beginning to be used around the world there were two major laser manufacturers in competition with each other. They were fighting over who owned the rights and therefore who got to make all the money over the lasers that were sold. Well, as they fought they both realized it was costing alot so they decided to shake hands and make a deal. What they decided was to build all their lasers with the need for a card (that could only be supplied by the manufacturer to be used ONE time) in order to fire the laser. As I recall, they charge about $250 or so (can’t remember exactly) for the card. Then the two companies split the $250 dollars. So, before your doctor even fires the laser he is already $250 in the hole per eye. Some places have tried to get around this fee by purchasing “gray market” lasers that have come through sources other than these manufacturers.

Now, every time your surgeon fires his laser he uses about $200 worth of gases necessary to fire the laser per eye. Now, the surgeon has to pay for the laser itself. Lasers run about $500,000 or so (unless you lease the laser from the manufacturer and then you have to pay a lease fee for using the laser). Now, the surgeon has to pay for the facility and the staff to provide the best in care. So, start adding it up.

1) $250 for the card
2) $200 for the gas
3) Monthly cost of debt for the laser, facility, and staff.
4) Almost forgot — MALPRACTICE INSURANCE!!!!!!!!

There ya go. It ain’t cheap to provide this type of care. If you want the best in laser and service 1) pre op exam 2) laser vision correction 3) one year of follow up care with free enhancements if needed 4) life time commitment to repeat laser if needed for a lifetime at no charge (this is what I feel is the highest level of care) it CANNOT be cheap. A laser facility simply can’t stay in business if they charge less than about $1400 to $1500 per eye. If you find a place is charging dramatically less than this it means they are taking SOMETHING away from you to get the reduced fee. They do it by decreasing their SERVICES (one place I know of was only including a one day and one week follow up visit) such as shortened followup care or no free enhancements or no life time commitment. Also, be wary of facilities that aggressively promote a VERY low fee. These are bait and switch operations. They just want to get you in the door so they can manipulate you into a higher price. Once you find out exactly what you get for that $299 to $699 per eye, they KNOW that you can be easily manipulated to trade up. If you resist their pressure they will do the laser for the lower fee but if you need ANYTHING other than the laser and a couple of post op visits you will pay through the nose for any future services. It will be like “Don’t call us unless you’re ready to get your bill fold out big time.” Hope this helped.

When I search for articles on the web, all I get are articles promoting one or the other, but I cant find a comparison. It seems like the Zypotix comes higher recommended but is it worth an extra $800? Or is the improvement between custom wavefront over flying spot worth it?

They all give the same results. The difference in the doctor you choose is more important than that difference in the available technologies.

good lasik in Portland Oregon?

where do i go for good lasik in Portland Oregon

While LASIK is by far the most popular form of Laser Eye Surgery, most laser eye surgeons in and near Portland perform other procedures, as well, including LASEK, Epi-LASIK, PRK and others. You might, therefore, want to check out all of these options as you make your decision. Some good descriptions of these different procedures are available through links at http://www.the-lasik-directory.com/OR_portland.html, and when it comes time to actually choosing which doctor will do your procedure, there’s a good web page entitled “How to choose a LASIK doctor?” that’s also available at this website at www.the-lasik-directory.com/choose_doctor.html. The main www.the-lasik-directory.com web page has links to other helpful information, as well.

Regardless of which Laser Eye Surgery Procedure you choose, it’s extremely important that you select a board-certified ophthalmologist who specializes in performing laser eye surgery and has a lot of experience performing these procedures. Qualified eye surgeons undergo training in refractive surgeries such as LASIK, LASEK and similar procedures, and you’d definitely want someone who has had successful, hands-on experience with many patients.

If you have an eye doctor that you’ve already been using — and you trust! — he or she would probably be the best person to recommend a colleague who is skilled in laser eye surgery. Our eyes and vision are too precious to risk having anything go wrong, so a referral from a trusted doctor can really help to reduce our instinctive concerns and anxieties.

If your personal friends or physicians can’t refer you to a specific eye surgeon, there’s the Casey Eye Institute at the Oregon Health & Science University with locations in and near Portland that would be a good resource. Their website is at www.ohsu.edu/xd/health/services/casey-eye/index.cfm and http://www.ohsu.edu/xd/health/services/casey-eye/clinical-services/laser-vision-correction/index.cfm.

In addition, some of the more popular laser eye surgery clinics in Portland are listed at:
www.eyes-and-vision.com/laser-eye-surgery-clinics-portland-oregon.html,

http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GZAZ_enUS375US375&q=LASIK+portland%2c+oregon,

www.trustedlasiksurgeons.com/portland_lasik_surgeons.htm,
and at other websites. Just be sure that you read reviews and check that no complaints have been brought against the doctor or clinic you select. Some websites that provide this complaints-checking include: http://www.healthgrades.com/, http://www.oregonlive.com/oregonian/malpractice/search/, and http://www.healthcarereviews.com/USA/OregonHealthcare.php, etc.

At http://www.kplasik.com/id12.html, there’s a good article entitled “Common Complaints About Lasik & How To Avoid Them” which you might want to read in advance of making your decision. There’s also the LASIK Complications website at http://www.lasikcomplications.com/. Additional links to websites about Lasik Complaints, etc. are available at http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient&aq=0h&oq=&ie=UTF-8&rlz=1T4GZAZ_enUS375US375&q=lasik+complaints.

Once you’ve narrowed down your search and you’ve selected an experienced and well-qualified laser eye surgeon, he or she will be able to explain the various surgical options available and talk with you about the costs, benefits and any potential complications of the procedure you choose.

If you’re covered by health insurance which includes vision and eye care benefits, you can always contact your insurance company’s Benefits Department or Customer Service Department for referrals to doctors within your plan.

I hope all of this information is helpful, and I truly wish you the best!

.

How does a person find out if a doctor or a clinic is reputable or what their surgical record is? Help! Laura*

I would like to have Lasik Eye Surgery and notice that there is quite a difference in prices at different eye clinics. I need to know if the eye clinics in the larger cities and their doctors are actually good in this eye treatment. I don’t want to risk my eyesight, just to save money. I am all about saving money and I don’t mind the travel. I just need to check out the doctor’s qualifications. Thank you

In general, higher prices are for a reason — I would suggest asking at local eyeglass shops, because they tend to recommend certain clinics and doctors that they personally have had perform their own procedures

Im a glaucoma patient and had a trabeculectomy done. Can I get eye corrective surgery like Lasik?

After the trabeculectomy surgery my eye’s pressure is stable. Are there other Laser correction options I might use?

Yes and no.
There’s nothing inherent in the trabeculectomy procedure that directly affects the cornea (or at least the parts that refractive surgery involves), so it’s not impossible to do both. The problem is convincing a surgeon that he should do an elective procedure on what amounts to a diseased eye — even if your pressures are stable now, there’s no guarantee that will remain the case indefinitely, and thinning the corneas via surgery makes it much more difficult to monitor pressures. There are other laser and non-laser refractive surgeries, but it’s still the same problem of doing surgery on an eye that has some preexisting problems.
Your best bet is to call around different surgery centres and say up front “Look, I have glaucoma, it was treated ___ years ago and my pressures are ___, will you still consider me as a patient?” Every surgeon has their own criteria, and they’ll let you know one way or the other.

Can anyone who’s had lasik corrective surgery let me know about their experience?

My eyes are bad, my glasses are thick, I can’t wear contacts, and I’m ready to see clearly. I’d like to know the cost, what the procedure was like, how well you saw afterward, and any side effects you may have experienced. I’m a little frightened of the actual procedure, so insight about that is especially appreciated! Thanks!

I had Lasik over a year ago. And if I could re live it, I’d choose to do it, every single time. Its worth every penny and any fears. I wore glasses, than contacts for as long as I could remember, and it is about the most AMAZING feeling you can have, waking up the next day, opening your eyes and you can see everything. And it is just that fast, the next day you can see! The procedure itself… they put a clamp on your eye to keep it open, there’s pressure, than depending on what machine and how much you’re paying for the procedure, sometimes the doctors create your flap by hand, or its by machine… I had the machine do it. There’s a burning smell, not unlike burning hair. Than they pull the flap back (you can see all this as its happenning) and than there’s light…. than darkness. Than you feel and see the doc using almost a mini paintbrush to put the flap back down. Than its over. Simple as that. They do it one eye at a time, you’re awake the whole time and its NOT painful. There’s a little pressure but that’s it. My clinic gave me a relaxant beforehand. Total procedure takes NO MORE than 15 minutes! Its amazing. Its scary, I cried through my whole procedure. But again, I would do it again if I had the choice. Side effects: I work with computers and only took 4 days off work after the procedure… than was back starring at the screen… so they told me thats why I had headaches for two weeks after the procedure, but that’s it! The dry eye thing… I had dry eyes REALLY BAD for a whole year, a bottle of eye drops will be your new limb. But now its gone!

I am thinking about getting done but I am wary of the risks? Was it worth it? Would you do it again?

I was about 20/250 Before Lasik surgery last year. The procedure was painless, probably due to the Valium they gave me. The ride home (as a passenger, of course) was fairly uncomfortable, mainly due to light sensitivity. The doctor gave me dark goggles, but the light was still too bright. I was in some pain once I got home (maybe 3 hours post procedure), but I had some left over Vicodin, and took two doses of that. The Vicodin took the edge off. Slept fine that night. Woke up the next morning, and I COULD SEE FINE! Hallelujah! I was jazzed up about that. I drove myself to my one day check up (an 2 hour round trip) with no problems. For that check up, I was seeing at 20/25, less than 24 hours after the surgery. I went to work that afternoon (doing ultrasound which really requires you to use your eyes). For my one week check up, I was seeing between 20/20 and 20/15. Other than the touch of pain I had post procedure, before I went to bed for the night, I had no other problems. I would do it again in a heartbeat! No more glasses, no more contacts, no more cleaning solutions and saline!

Just one other thing….I went to a doctor who used computerized, laser equipment. No knives were involved. But, it cost me a pretty penny. I paid $5500 for both eyes, but I was not comfortable going to a doctor that advertised in the newspaper for $500 per eye. Sometimes you get what you pay for! Good luck to you!

Hi all,

I am 25 and have had glasses for about 8 years (only worn daily for a few years). I am considering laser surgery and notice in the ‘am i suitable’ type info that your prescrip shouldn’t have changed much in the last two years. Most websites are so commercial they don’t really tell you – how much is a big change? e.g. I went from -2.00 and -1.75 to -2.25 and -2.00 in about a year. Is that a lot? Also, what does ‘cylinder’ refer to on a prescription? Mine is -0.50, whatever that means. Cheers.

That does not sound like a signifcant change.

My optometrist says the back of my eyes are thinning?

She says that because of my being nearsighted that the back of my eyes are thinning and could eventually develop holes. I asked her if having corrective laser surgery to fix my vision (Lasik) would prevent that from deteriorating any farther, and she told me that it wouldn’t help. She is severely against Lasik, so I’m just wondering if she was trying to talk me out of it, or if that’s the truth

Lasik is a surgery that corrects your vision by changing the shape of the cornea (front part) of your eye. Nearsightedness is caused by the cornea being too steep, so that when light enters the eye, it ends up being focused in front of the retina (back of your eye), rather than on the retina where it should be focused.

During Lasik, the surgery makes an incision to create a flap of skin known as the “corneal flap”, which allows the surgeon access to the cornea. The cornea is then reshaped to correctly focus the light, and then the corneal flap is allowed to fall back over the cornea. It heals, holding the newly reshaped cornea in place.

Since the surgery is done on the front part of the eye, the only effect it has on the back part of the eye is that post-surgery, light falls on the back part of the eye properly. Unless the thinning in the back of your eyes is caused by a lack of light on the tissues, then your optometrist is correct, Lasix would have no effect on the thinning.

However, it might be possible that the thinning of your retinas actually is caused by lack of light. Since the light-reactive cells (rods and cones) that make up your retinas are not properly receiving the light that is supposed to activate them, the thinning of your retinas may be a form of atrophy of these cells.

It is likely that, in order to determine what, exactly, is causing your retinal thinning, you will need to see an ophthalmologist, however, you might try contacting your optometrist first. If the thinning is a type of cell atrophy, I would check with an ophthalmologist to see if having the Lasix surgery would correct the problem.

How well did it work? How much did it cost? What side effects did you have? Was it worth it? ~~ I’m considering having it done, and I want to know from someone who has had it done, what to expect. Any advice is appreciated.

It worked great. It is $3,950 but well worth it. My mom had it done three years ago. She works for an ophthalmologist who specializes in Laser Vision correction. She has worked with him for 13 years(ten when she had it done). She always says she wishes she would have done it earlier. She recommends NOT to rub your eyes when you get it done. They will do each eye at a different time, two weeks after the first. You will have pain but it will go away. Also, you will have to wear funny eye goggles at night for the first few weeks. Good Luck and you will not forget it. Oh, and the only thing is after you need to put alot of eye drops in because it dries out your eyes.
I can’t wait to get it done myself. I have to wait until I am older though.

Any cure for this? Please Answer.?

Well, I asked this question more than once. We all know Myopia(nearsightedness), we know its causes but are there any natural cures. I need someone that experianced it and it worked with him. I tried books such as Rebuild Your Vision, but it doesn’t seem logical to cure my case(correct me if I am wrong). So If anyone tried something and it worked, please share it with us. Isn’t there anyway other than Lasik Surgery, I am asking this because I am still a young boy, so I cannot apply LASIK on me.

I used to be very skeptical about natural methods to cure myopia, because all the books I read gave no scientific explanation. They simply said : ” do this, do that”, but no reason was ever given. Finally last year I found a book which is all about facts, science and explanations. The description of the exercises actually takes a very small portion of the 220 pages of the book.
I was totally convinced that it was the right method and I decided to start practicing it. So far my myopia has decreased from -3.75 to -1.25 and now I’m sure I’ll be able to get rid of the glasses by next year.
The method is not difficult but it’s complex. There are many things to learn and the use of the right glasses (i.e. undercorrections) is extremely important. Some people may found the book difficult but in my opinion it’s not. It’s simply full of many , many important concepts. The method consists of two parts: 1) stretching exercises for the eye-muscles; 2) retinal defocus (training your eyes to focus that which is out-of -focus).
This is the book I’m using http://www.amazon.com/Secret-Perfect-Vision-Prevent-Nearsightedness/dp/1556436777/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254924159&sr=1-1
I’ve heard that the U.S. edition omits some scientific details contained in the original edition. It’s a pity because they would have been surely interesting, but I imagine it was done to make it an easier reading.

If you decide to read the book, do it slowly and make sure to understand all of it. I had to read it more than once and I found the Faq section extremely useful (it’s at the end of the book, don’t skip it).

ICL (implantable contact lens) instead of LASIK for moderate/mild myopia?

I have considered Lasik Surgery for myopia but I am concerned about the risk of complications. I have now been reading about ICL as an alternative. It is less commonplace than LASIK but seems to have several advantages – including fact that it is reversible.

At the moment it seems that ICL is only offered for people with very high myopia who aren’t eligible for LASIK. Why is this? Is it likely to become more commonplace in the future for people with moderate myopia?

How do the risks compare to LASIK?

Anyone out there who has had the surgery or have any direct experience of it?

Just to clarify – an ICL is not a cataract procedure. ICL’s sometimes referred to as Artisan and Artiflex are lenses that are positioned in the anterior chamber of the eye – in front of the iris / pupil. CLE (Clear Lens Exchange, PHAKIC IOL etc are terms associated with Cataract procedures that occur in the posterior chamber.

Anyhow – long and short Jon is that the procedure with the least amount of risk is generally the way in which these decisions are made. For example, a small myopic correction to be applied to a symmetrically shaped and thick cornea, carries less risk with laser than with ICL – infections from ICL can cause blindness and loss of eye after all, Laser Vision Correction can’t [see Endophthalmitis just to be certain]. However, when the risk of infection say is outweighed by the induction of other needless complications such as post-Lasik Ectasia – when lasering a highly myopic correction on an asymmetric, thin cornea for example, then ICL’s can be looked at as a viable option. There are other issues to be concerned with – reversible it may be, but the lenses are visible and if you have large pupils you have big problems with low light vision.

In some cases, pure economics plays a factor in the decision making process. ICL’s cost lots of money – £2500 odd per eye give or take. When you can safely laser a patient for half that and still make 100% more profit on the laser, why bother with ICL’s?

However – I will point you in the direction of a wonderful site that is thin on marketing and graphic design, but much larger on fact and detail – Mr Rostron is an Ophthalmic surgeon of high standing – take a look at his website – http://www.chadrostron.co.uk/SiteMap/SiteMap.htm

Kind regards

Is Laser Eye Surgery safe?

Is it still a risk? What’s Lasek? Thanks.

Well I’m 22 and had all laser interlase Lasik Eye Surgery about a month ago and love it. My vision is now 20/20 (I was classified as legally blind before the procedure). The first 24 hours were definitely uncomfortable (I slept most of it though, I’m quite the wuss when it comes to pain). I was told by my surgeon that due to my age there is a 30% chance that I will need what they call an enhancement procedure in 10 years. However my surgery came with 100% lifetime guarantee so if I do need an enhancement I won’t need to pay again which is nice since the procedure did cost me $4000. Go to a free consolation and find out if you are a candidate (I actually went to a few places). I ended up going to Lasik Plus (http://www.lasikplus.com/), they have tons of locations. During the consolation you bascially go through a very in depth eye exam to check various things (one of the big ones is testing the thickness of your cornea (if they’re not that thick it will limit which types of Lasik Surgery you may be able to get, if any). Generally they won’t do surgery if your vision has not been stabilized for at least 1-2 years. Just remember there are risks but the recent FDA complainants are not new (or really a lot when you consider how many people have had it done), the press just focuses on them every once in a while. The key is to make sure you find a surgeon that you feel comfortable in that is willing to answer any questions you may have.

i made some tests to see if there is a chance i can make Lasik Surgery ,the results show in my left eye i have aberrations in higher order – order 6- 147% ,the dr told me it’s possible it get better or remain the same . has anyone here had this( aberrations in higher orders) and get better??

What the laser center did was a test using an instrument called an aberrometer. This instrument tests for, as you said, higher order aberrations. Another word that might help you understand better is “distortions”. We now have the ability to not only correct your prescription but the laser can be programmed to improve the distortions present in the cornea. If you don’t have much in regard to higher order aberrations it probably isn’t worth the added expense to use wave front technology and perform a “custom” Lasik Procedure. But, if you do indeed have a significant amount of aberrations then you may see even better with a custom procedure than a standard procedure which does not deal with aberrations.

LASIK destroyed my life.
I lost my job and studies, and now I can not read without my eyes hurt due to dry eye.
I will regret for life.

LASIK causes dry eye.
The dry eye is forever.

PD: LASIK was the worst decision of my life. LASIK promotes permanent conditions with no cure:

-Night Halos/Starbursts
-Depression
-Loss of Visual Acuity
-Accelerated Aging of the Eye
-Lack of Natural Tear Production
-Each Year Post LASIK Vision Gets Progressively Worse
-Cell Tissue Mutation

I am considering Laser Eye Surgery in april..i am 23 years old and was looking for people’s stories, suggestions, tips, etc. I have booked 3 consultations with 3 different offices to see which one is best. Is it possible to get a bladeless procedure done?

I had this done several years ago. Might have been 10 or so, so I’m not up on the latest info.

In a nutshell, I recall reading that if your pupils are large, you are not a candidate. If your eyes tend to be dry, it’s a bad idea. So be sure to ask for a dry eye test. Blindness is not something you need to worry about. I and one other person I talked to both noticed a decrease in our close vision. Not bad enough that I need reading glasses yet, but noticeable.

I highly recommend doing as much research as possible ahead of time. The doctor I went to had a web page with a link to questions you should ask your doctor. Unfortunately I no longer have it, but perhaps you could search for that phrase and come up with something.

One other thing – you get what you pay for. So just keep that in mind.
