Let me try to answer your questions in order:

Failure resulting in worse vision? Nearly none. Today’s laser surgeries are very safe and effective. We know more about the eye than ever before. As such, patients are thoroughly screened prior to surgery to minimize complications (corneal ectasias, bacterial infection, etc.). Note that I did not say that there are no complications. In rare instances, complications could potentially lead to decreased vision, even blindness. Examples are extreme bacterial infection of the flap/cornea, free flaps that are damaged during surgery (rare, but has been documented), diffuse lamellar keratitis (stages 3 or 4), etc. These are rare occurances, and some studies put this risk around 0.5%.

More commonly, minor complications such as a dislodged flap, wrinkled flap, epithelial ingrowth, or regression towards your old prescription occurs. Without the eye jargon: little things that the eye surgeon can easily take care of.

Does the surgery alter eye color or intensity? No. Eye color is due to pigmentation of the iris, which is internal, while surgery changes the cornea, which is external.

Scarring? Yes and no. The most visible scar is only going to be visible to your eye doctor when he/she uses a biomicroscope to look at your eye. The amazing thing about eyes is their ability to heal. The tissue that is cut will “reconnect” to a degree; however, that central part of the cornea will never be as strong as it once was. Should you get poked just right in the eye, etc. that flap could pop up or dislodge. This is why patients are not recommended to return to swimming or basketball or other vigorous activities for a short time After Lasik. Note that this doesn’t just spontaneously occur – it would take some amount of force for the flap to dislodge after healing. With LASIK, the tissue is not burned (coagulated) as in some other surgeries (like with the retina). Rather, the tissue is ablated by a laser. Each laser is different – excimer lasers, like those used in LASIK, PRK, and other refractive surgeries work by photoablation and do not burn the eye.

After laser surgery, you can be expected to need a lot of artificial tears. The ocular surface needs to stay moist (and the nerves in the cornea that are responsible for the tear reflex are damaged temporarily by the surgery). Also, eyedrops that decrease inflammation (corticosteroids) and an antibiotic drop will be prescribed.

To wrap up: without actually evaluating you it would be hard to say if you are a good candidate for laser surgery. Age, glasses prescription, and ocular and systemic health need to be evaluated before undergoing laser surgery.

There is more than one procedure for laser refractive surgery – LASIK (laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis) being the most sought after due the most promising outcomes of crystal-clear vision. Other procedures include PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), LASEK (laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratectomy), and epi-LASIK (epithelial laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis). Each surgery is a little different and offers varied visual outcomes. There is even variation within Lasik Procedures.

Typically, the best (and most costly) procedure is custom platform LASIK with the flap being cut by a laser (a femtosecond laser such as IntraLase). A custom platform allows computerized calculation of your vision after LASIK to a more thorough degree than less-expensive options. (This is typically marketed as “blade-free” LASIK). Note that the choice of flap-cutting tool does not enhance the outcome of the procedure – blade (microkeratome cut) or lasered (laser cut) flaps both work the same. It is the platform (custom or traditional) that is actually responsible for the extreme clarity.

I you have had Laser Or Lasik eye surgery can you still become a helicopter pilot in the army?

I have heard from some yes and from some no. What are the current rules for this? Also if you do become a pilot as a warrant officer do you get to choose the helicopter you want to fly?

Yes you can, so long as your eyes are corrected to be within Army standards and you can pass a Class 1A flight physical. Get it done before you apply for flight school. If you get here and you still need it done, you’ll be kicked out, as I almost was. But yes, you can have refractive surgery. Be sure to have plenty of documentation, as you’ll still need a waiver on your file, but they process waivers for lasik all the time. The airframe you’ll end up flying is chosen as a result of your class position at the end of the Initial Entry Rotary Wing training course (where they teach you the basics to flying helicopters). If you rank at the top of your class, you’ll get a choice of what you want. If you’re at the bottom, you’ll have very little say. Each class gets _x_ amount of each airframe, as people choose slots get pulled off the board accordingly.

Question About Lasik eye surgury?

I am considering this surgery. Does the monovision make it difficult to see the ball when playing tennis and do I need to follow all the post op precautions such as no physical sports for 72 hours after?

I don’t know the answer to the first part of your question, but I know the answer to the second.

Follow the doctor’s orders. You have very, very small blood vessels in your eyes, and following eye surgery to need to avoid heavy exertion. So not just sports, don’t go nuts cleaning your house, really athletic sex, dancing up a storm, or any activity that makes you go red in the face.

72 hours is only three days. Oh, and don’t take any saunas.

How much does it cost lasik without any insurance?

I really need to do it (lasik) my prescr. is very high but I don t have insurance, how much can cost me?

$4000 is about right for most places. Best thing to do is to call some of your local Ophthalmology clinics, these are practices that have MD’s, and may provide surgery options. Many places do Free Lasik consultations, and will let you know if you are even a candidate. Also, if you wear contacts, they usually want you to wear glasses for several weeks before the surgery with no contact lens wear in order to properly reshape the cornea.

Lasik is a high risk surgery with many complications, why would anyone get it?

You can Google for websites of people who share their experience, many of them are negative. Lasik doesn’t give vision as good as glasses but costs $4000+ and is high risk. Why Get Lasik now and not wait for better technology?

Lasik is only high risk in the hands of an unexperienced surgeon. Look at the total number of cases versus the relatively small number of bad outcomes.

$4000? That’s high. It’s not cheap, but you can find an excellent surgeon to work on both eyes for a lot left.

Laser Lasik Eye Surgery long term effects?

I have been thinking about going for Laser Eye Surgery, my vision is like 4 and 4.50. I used to wear contacts all the time, until my eyes got very dry and now I can’t even wear a contact in my right eye – it hurts when I am taking it out and the contact stuck to my eye. I would like to know if there are any long term bad effects after Laser eye surgery, e.g. will my vision worsen in the future as I’m now only 24, and what happens if I suffer cataracts when I’m old? Am I still able to have another eye surgery to fix that problem? Also, has anyone had such a problem with contacts being stuck to the eye and being very painful to remove?? I mentioned it to my optometrist and she said my right eye was severely dry. But even after resting my eyes by not wearing contacts & wearing only glasses for a few months, when I tried wearing my contacts again, I could hardly wear it in my right eye for more than 1 hr.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.
