I have astigmatism, can I get Lasik Eye Surgery?

How old do you have to be? What other alternatives are there, besides glasses, contacts, and lasik eye surgery? I’d like something permanant. How long does it take for it to heal? Are there serious risks during the procedure? If I can’t Get Lasik eye surgery done, what’s the problem? Sorry about all the questions, feel free to give me as much information as you can because I’m pretty sure I’m missing something that I’ll want to know later . .

Lasik works for most healthy people with healthy eyes who need total corrections less than about 3 or 4 diopters. It has to do with the shape of the eye and the thickness of the cornea.

You really should wait to have the proceedure until you have stopped growing and until your corrective prescriptive lenses have been the same for a year. When you are older, you will probably go 3 or 6 years without changing your prescription. You will not want to risk complications by having a lasik revision frequently while you are young.

The cornea is sliced with a micro thin blade (micro karatome) and flipped up. The lazer contours the freshly exposed inside tissue of the cornea and corrects the vision. The flap is then closed.

The corneal flap makes a bandage and the whole thing heals pretty quickly.

There are risks. Infection, halos in the night vision are the ones that come to mind.

You need to see two or three doctors, in my opinion. The consultations take about an hour. The consultations are free or about 50 dollars.

Lasik will not work if the astigmatism is very severe. My correction was more than 4.75 diopters and would have required PRK.

PRK requires the lazering off the front of the cornea and takes 2-3 weeks of rest and no work to heal.

My brother had PRK and needed 16 days. My sister had lasik and was back to work in three day. Both are happy and generally do not need any glasses.

Why do some people lose near vision After Lasik?

I’ve read on some forums, that certain people, will almost definitely lose their ability to see up close, after a Lasik Procedure? Why is this? And is there a way to know ahead of time if this would arise?

The people you’re referring to that have had LASIK and then lose their ability to see up close probably have presbyopia. Presbyopia is associated with aging – over time the lens in our eyes loses elasticity and therefore the ability to change shape to allow us to see up close. That’s why people get the over the counter reading glasses. LASIK is surgery to change to curvature of the cornea to allow people to see without correction. Presbyopia has to do with the lens. People who have LASIK to correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and / or astigmatism will still need to wear reading glasses once they reach a certain age – we say 40 years old as an estimate. Some people who are older and have already developed presbyopia have Monovision Lasik – one eye is surgically corrected to be able to see up close & the other eye to see in the distance. Having cataract surgery also doesn’t change the fact the everyone will develop presbyopia.

Lasik Vs Prk?

Has any one had any experience with PRK? I’m getting PRK done in the next couple of days and getting a bit nervous. I’m not a good candidate with Lasik. Please let me know your experiences if you can. Thank you!

I had PRK done in both of my eyes back in 2003 and I have no regrets. At the moment I was in the military and I heard all the pros and cons and why the don’t allow marines or special forces to get the lasik, and decided on PRK. I can tell you that the surgery is unconfortable but very short and the first 4 days will not be fun or enjoyable when it comes to light sensitivity (no joke), even watching tv hurts (even with the pain medication)… but it will be over and you’ll never have to worry about that again. Make sure to use the drops (that will leave an awful taste in your mouth) religiously and to wear the sun glasses all the time, even on cloudy days to avoid scaring, which is one of the main concerns after PRK. You’ll probably experience seeing halos around lights, specially at night, but don’t freak out, that goes away with some time. BE PATIENT. After every surgery there is a process… First you’ll be sensitive to the light, then the contact lens will bother you, then you vision will be a little blury, and the taste of the drops, etc… but at the end it will all be worth it!

Oh, and if you can get away with not looking at a computer screen for the first couple of days, that will also help..

Should I Do Lasik now or wait for better safer technology?

How can I correct my eyesight?

I have a cataract behind my left eye which causes it to be very week to sunlight almost as if i had a lazy eye and also the left eye tilts to the center a little bit you can only notice it from far away my right eye has perfect vision. is there any surgery that can fix this? will lasik correct this? Um It would depend on the doctor, the proceedures you need done and the complexity of what the doctor thinks you need. Insurances are all different and most do not cover lasik. this is too general of a question with too many complicated variables to be asking in here. You need to get a consultation from your doctor. Never go by the cheapest, but the best…. You can not go back once it is done….ask your eye doctor to refer you to a reputable surgeon.

I m 18 and have longsightedness, and accommodative esotropia in my right eye.Can surgery correct this?

Basically im 18, i have +5 prescription in my left eye and +5.5 in my right. I suffer from asigmatisms in my eyes, and I have accommodative esotropia in my right eye. Currently I have good vision in glasses, due to there multifocal component. I love wearing contacts but near vision is harder and more blurry. What are my options? What would you do if you were me? Is multifocal contact lenses a good option? Is eye muscle surgery able to correct my accommodative esotropia? Is lasik/laser able to correct my longsightedness? How common is my eye complications? Multifocal contacts are a possibility or using reading glasses over contacts.

Surgery is not a treatment option for accommodative esotropia. Your farsightedness might be correctable with LASIK but LASIK will not change your need for reading glasses. LASIK is a substitute for non multifocal glasses or contacts; if reading is difficult with your contacts it will just as difficult After Lasik.

Average Cost of Lasik?

I’m looking to Get Lasik done in the next year…my vision is fairly decent … – .79 is my worst eye… anyone know what the average price should be around for Custom Lasik? Jeeper is correct. Once you get to your first duty station, check in with optometry at the hospital…They will evaluate you and assign you a priority. You will then be placed on a waiting list and when your number comes up they will perform the surgery. And yes they will pay for it.

I have done it 10 years ago and do not regret it for a second.
I do not have the perfect vision but I am happy.
Give it sometime longer it will all adjust just fine.
One of my eyes healed slightly faster then the other. I don’t think there is a formula to it.

Best way to look up Lasik Doctors?

I would be interested in getting lasik. I would like the laser treatment as opposed to the knife. I have -5.50 prescription if that matters. I am interested in getting a payment plan set up. I live in PA. Would like to pay $30 or less a month on a payment plan. I saw a billboard stating only $25 a month, but I dont remember the provider. (Yes, I know the payments would be dragged out, thats okay…)

I can’t find a good source for you. However, I was told that doctors can literally get a “certificate” where they are taught to use lasik in a weekend. The program I heard did not encourage using those. Instead, it said to find someone who has a fellowship in this type of surgery, which I believe said meant a year or more in training of dong this type of surgery.

I would suggest that you go to the reference section of your library, and look through a book called “America’s Top Doctors” and start there.

Who here has had the Lasik Eye Surgery done?

Ive been considering getting it done but i wanna know. how has it improved your life since? how much does it cost? and if you live in colorado whos a good eye surgeon to go to?

Me. I had this last may 20, 2010(3rd friday of may)
Improve my life? yes it improves a lot. Confidence? yes. And it’s really bad last time in high school intramurals because I want to wear my glasses during the basketball game but they won’t allow me and my eyesight is really bad 700-800.
The surgery is fine 5-10 minute per eye, they’ll use a device so you can’t blink. The healing process for me was 5 hours.
Here in Philippines it cost 60k or 1500 dollars in US, but I know it’s more expensive there.

Eye corrective surgery (Lasik, Lasek, PRK)?

I have several questions about it. First of all i did some looking around and i think my eye sight is about 20/350 or so. This is based off the prescription of my contacts. can anyone confirm or correct it?

My second question is what is the safest type of surgery out there. I wouldn’t mind still having to wear glasses for reading. Its just what i do in the rest of my day that would make no glasses alot more convenient.

Bad Glare & Starbursting(Non Lasik Related)?

I am suffering from severe glare, starbursting, and halos at night. I saw several eye doctors and they checked for glacoma, cateracts, eye dieses, etc and found nothing. They did state that my pupils are very large and that could be the problem. Then why is it, if I sqint or look through a pinhole the glare issues are reduced greatly. They gave me those yellow nighttime driving glasses and they do not correct the problem. It annoys me so much when I watch TV at night because the TV will have glare coming off of it. To fix that, I put 4 lamps with 42 watt, 150 watt equivalent compact fluorescent bulbs in all 4 corners of the room, just to make the room evenly lit so I don’t see starbursting and glare coming off the TV. What is wrong with my eyes, I am 20 years old and it has been like this for about 2 years.

when you squint or look through a pinhole, the amount of light entering the eye is reduced, thereby reducing the chance for glare/star-bursting. If there is nothing physically wrong, i.e., cataract, spherical abberation, etc., and you simply have a large pupil, there is nothing you can do to make it go away. You can wear a prosthetic contact lens with a black backing and smaller pupil aperture. This reduces the glare for a patient of mine who has no iris at all to block the light. Good luck to you.

If she has cataracts, lasik is NOT for her. That’s not a cataract treatment. She’ll need cataract surgery.

Talk to the physicians office and find out exactly what surgery she’s going to have. If it’s lasik, find another doctor. After her cataract and lens implant surgery she may elect to have lasik to try and eliminate or reduce astigmatism, but not before.

my sister got hers done over 10 years ago and she hasn’t had any problems since. i think she said that the doctors told her that she may have to get each eye redone after 5 years or so but i know for sure that she hasn’t had to go in again. pretty expensive as it was “per eye” rate but she said that she was glad that she did it.

Lasik Eye Surgery and smoking?

ok im not a real smoker but i like to smoke ocasionally.. its been 3 weeks since ive had lasik eye surgery… my prescritipon was -1.25 with slight astigmatism a 3 out of 10 astigmatism as she said… i was just curious i dont need people telling me smoking is bad i know that… i just wanted to know ONE when can i smoke cigarettes without worrying about them affecting my vision permenatly and TWO when can i smoke marijuana without having it affect my vision permantly… thank you to those that adress this question and for the people that preach get a life. would you suggest me having a Lasik Wavefront Eye Surgery?

For instance, I see small halos at night when I’m driving around the street lights and car lights, they are not great enough to really bother me. The paperwork before the surgery is pretty scary, you have to sign a waiver in which it explains all the things that can go wrong, so in the end, you just have to ask yourself if you are willing to deal with the cons no matter their size. There are also about three or four different technology’s for laser surgery, I know lasik and wavefront are two different ones. So just make sure your doctor know which technology is best for you.

Has anybody had the Laser Eye Surgery done at Lasik Vision Institute in Rancho Cordova?

I went for a consultation a few weeks ago and the office seemed very clean and everyone was very nice and very thorough with the explanations and so i have an appt for Thursday and im very nervous, has anyone gone here before? i read somethings about scams and bad service but those were mostly in Florida and some other states but i couldn’t find anyone who had it done i this specific location. or any info or experiences about this specific clinic? Please! i am scared now…

If you are scared, cancel the appointment until you can get more information. Although the Rancho Cordova Lasik Vision Institute does have a website, I could find no independent patient reviews. This is both good and bad. People who have had unpleasant experiences or bad surgical outcomes are more likely to post complaints than those that don’t, but not finding any reviews does concern me. If you know the name of your Lasik Surgeon, you can try googling “his/her name MD and Rancho Cordova” and see the individual surgeon has any patient reviews.

Were your eyes examined by your Lasik surgeon and were you assured you that you are a good candidate for this procedure?
Has the Institute discussed all the risks and side effects that could result from this procedure?
Has the procedure and post surgical care been fully explained to you?

If any of the above were not covered during your consultation, I would be leary of going through with the surgery.

You cannot have this surgery until your vision has stabilized and it is safest if has been stabilized for two years. Vision usually stabilizes in your early to mid twenties. Having the surgery before total vision stabilization will result in your having undergo the surgery again at a later time.

Breast augmentation before wedding…?

I’ve been wanting to get a breast enlargement for years and years. Recently I’ve spent a lot of money on lasik and on fixing my car but I still want to try to get it done soon. If I get enough money, how long before my wedding would be a good time? Does it need to be 6 months or more before so I’m comfortable and healed or is healing fairly quick? I just want to be full speed for our great honeymoon in Hawaii!!

I’d recommend at least 6 months worth of recovery time. Even if you heal quickly and are feeling great, scars (if they’re visible) can take time to fade, and sometimes things go wrong (not to freak you out or anything…but crap DOES happen on occasion) and you would want a cushion of time in the event that something needs corrected or repaired. As well, the surgery site may be tender for quite some time, so you would want an adequate amount of time to heal COMPLETELY (inside and out) before smashing yourself into a wedding gown and romping around on the beaches and whatever.
