I live in Dublin too and got mine done a month ago in the Mater Private Eye Laser Suite. Almost 4,000 altogether but that includes all aftercare and god forbid if you ever needed retreatment.

There are two procedures- lasek or lasik.

I can only speak from experience, I got lasek. Its a non invasive procedure, from what I understand lasek is more painful than lasik afterwards, you have instant vision with lasik but it takes a few weeks for lasek. (But I do have better than 20/20 now!)

They give you a valium, put about 6 anaesthetic drops in your eyes, bring you in to the room, and from the time you go in that door to the time you leave, I doubt even 10 mins passed.

You dont feel anything at all and I’m someone who cannot stand anyone near my eyes, Ive never even worn contacts so thats big coming from me! I did smell some burning though but that was about it. You go in so worried and nervous and you leave the room thinking I cant believe I was so nervous about THAT!

For lasek, when you get it done a hard contact lens is put on your eye (to protect it and to try to reduce some of the pain). The lens stays in for 3 days then you go back to have it taken out(and its out so quickly and painlessly you dont even know). However the 3 days it’s in, it’s uncomfortable, it feels like all your eyelashes have turned into your eye, but hey if its only for a few days then its no problem!

The only problem I found were the constant drops, I had so many! I’m still on them now but only twice a day in one eye and 4 in the other, and thats a month after the procedure.

I encourage you NOT to do any research into them and just do it, because I was so tempted to look all the cons up once I made the appointment, and I honestly dont know if I’d have gone through with it if I did, I’m so glad I didn’t because for the first time in 15 years I can see independently.

You’ll thank me when you wake up in the morning and see what not reaching for your glasses is like!

I know that there are many places offering both of the above procedures for a considerably less amount than I paid, but honestly, I know so many people that went to one place in ballsbridge(ads for it on tv constantly) and theyre now getting it done for a THIRD time. So if this is something you REALLY want, then dont take a chance, you only pay for the service you get, and I dunno about anyone else but my eyes are not something I’d look to cheapen!

Nope. First off, no such thing exists. Secondly, that’s actually one of the concerns surgeons have before doing surgery, and if you read the fine print of your waivers and whatever, it’s quite likely that the problem of presbyopia is specifically addressed.
As far as other surgeries go, there’s no scientifically proven way to get rid of presbyopia, despite what some people try to sell you on. You’re stuck with glasses, contacts, or forever struggling to read the menu in restaurants
Actually, there is one option — monovision. Basically, you correct one eye for distance (which is what your original procedure did) and the other for near vision (i.e. make/leave it a bit nearsighted). You’d be required to try it in contact lenses first, and I doubt the LASIK version would be free for you, but it might be worth discussing it with your optometrist or ophthalmologist. Lots of people have trouble getting used to monovision, but there are some who absolutely love it.

Lasik…Must have a second corrective procedure. Anyone else?

I had Lasik Surgery about 6 months ago and must have it done again because one eye was not corrected enough. Has anyone else had a second procedure? If so, was the second one satisfactory? Should I demand a discount?

The likelihood of needing a second procedure, the risks involved, and whether that would be a new contract, covered as completion of the first treatment, or somewhere in-between, should have been made very clear in the comprehensive paperwork your should have gone through (and signed) before the first procedure.

Something is slightly off, even if it’s only poor communication, if you weren’t clear on this before you had the first Lasik.

Do you still have a copy of the waivers and information sheets you were given?

A second procedure has no greater risk than the first one, assuming there is still adequate corneal thickness with which to work.

Does Lasik lazer Eye surgury return eyes to how they should be or does it bypass & make the eye see a new way?

i’ve researched this a lot and all professionals just say is that it makes us see good again by reversing the process of bad vision…but that is too vague for me.

(this is for basic myopia with no other ailments..)

what i want to know is this: do our eyes go back to exactly as they were by truely reversing the eye’s problem….

OR… does this surgery just bypass something to create a new, man-made way of seeing good again? by forcing the eye do work differently to achieve good vision in an unnatural way?

The basic concept of LASIK is like this, which is more of a technical correction then anything—-LASIK is used to help treat farsightedness, nearsightedness and astigmatism. To treat nearsightedness (myopia), the cornea must be made flatter (less steep). This is accomplished by removing tissue from the center or central portion of the cornea. To treat farsightedness, the central cornea must be made steeper (less flat). This is accomplished by directing the laser beam to remove tissue from around the peripheral (outside) area of the exposed cornea. To treat astigmatism, the cornea must be made more spherical and uniformly curved (instead of irregular like a football or egg). After all, your eyeball is still your eyeball. Your cornea is still your cornea. The purpose of the surgery is to cut your cornea to a proper shape so when light passes through your cornea, clearer pictures are reflected to your retina. There is no secret or bypass. It’s just a technical fix using the laser beam as a knife to cut the cornea to a more proper shape..

My son had eye surgery done there. By a Dr. Hardwig.
he does mostly cataract surgeries but also did laser stuff on my son.
You can also google doctors in your area that do this type of surgery.
The laser stuff does not take more than a couple of minute’s
and my son didn’t feel a thing.

So I had My Lasik eye surgery… And the results were better than expected?

So I had Lasik Intralase CustomVue wavefront 2 days ago.

My eyes are starting to heal and almost by the hour my eyes have been improving dramatically.

I had a post day check up where they said my eyes will continue to get sharper over the next week.

However I did an eye test and my eyes are 20/10 (in both eyes).
This is twice as good as 20/20 and almost at the limit of human possibility for good vision. I am obviously tremendously happy about this

I did a lot of research into Laser Eye Surgery and apparently not everyone (but most people) get 20/20.
To get 20/15 happens but not heard of very often. But to get 20/10… I have not heard of any reported cases except a couple of that correction.

How rare is it?

Lasik Surgery has an immediate effect of overcorrection, but in time (a few weeks), the eye should settle into is true prescription, which will be a bit softer.

In time, your vision will become a little less crisp-but it will still be lightyears better than you were before glasses.

That being said, the long-term effects also remain to be seen. Some people’s vision changes steadily throughout their lives, and others have a bell curve shape. Most doctors advise that you only Get Lasik surgery done once your prescription stays relatively static for 2 years. I’m assuming that your needed correction wasn’t terrible, otherwise they wouldn’t have done it on someone so young. Don’t let some of the other answers scare you-while I can’t have my surgery due to thin corneas, I have several friends who had it while still in high school.

10 years later, they are still glasses-free. And if they need some mild correction in a few years, so what? At least they had their twenties, right?

Lasik/Lasek – what constitutes a ‘significant’ change in prescription?

Hi all,

I am 25 and have had glasses for about 8 years (only worn daily for a few years). I am considering laser surgery and notice in the ‘am i suitable’ type info that your prescrip shouldn’t have changed much in the last two years. Most websites are so commercial they don’t really tell you – how much is a big change? e.g. I went from -2.00 and -1.75 to -2.25 and -2.00 in about a year. Is that a lot? Also, what does ‘cylinder’ refer to on a prescription? Mine is -0.50, whatever that means. Cheers.

i’m 21 and short sighted. I’d love to have laser eye surgery but some things hold me back, such as ‘oh but what if i go blind afterwards’. I have been wearing contacts for about 4 years now. And i do not go out without them on. In the comfort in my own home i wear my glasses. Ok yes im worried what other people think about me. I think glasses are really geeky and make me look ugly. It worked great. It is $3,950 but well worth it. My mom had it done three years ago. She works for an ophthalmologist who specializes in Laser Vision correction. She has worked with him for 13 years(ten when she had it done). She always says she wishes she would have done it earlier. She recommends NOT to rub your eyes when you get it done. They will do each eye at a different time, two weeks after the first. You will have pain but it will go away. Also, you will have to wear funny eye goggles at night for the first few weeks. Good Luck and you will not forget it. Oh, and the only thing is after you need to put alot of eye drops in because it dries out your eyes.
I can’t wait to get it done myself. I have to wait until I am older though.

I am going tomorrow to have a Blade Free Lasik procedure performed and the doctor prescribed 2 5mg pills of Valium to be taken an hour before the surgery. Now, I understand all of the precautions (don’t take if pregnant, no heavy machinery, no driving, etc…) but one kind of threw me off. Why is it that I cannot eat or drink grapefruit when taking the Valium? It does not say to stay away from citrus-which maybe I could figure out, but only grapefruit in particular is mentioned.

Actually, grapefruit juice more than grapefruit itself seems to be the problem – something it contains interferes with the absorption and metabolism of a number of drugs (although there is increasing concern that eating grapefruit might do the same). The affected drugs include calcium channel blockers used to treat high blood pressure, non-sedating antihistamines such as Hismanal (astemizole), certain tranquilizers including Valium (diazepam), Xanax (alprazolam), Halcion (triazolam), and others, a number of cholesterol-lowering drugs, including Lipitor (atorvastatin), Mevacor (lovastatin) and other statins, and the immunosuppressive drugs used to prevent rejection of transplanted tissues organs and the antiviral agents used to treat HIV/AIDS.

With the tranquilizers, you may notice increased sedation. More dangerous side effects including kidney toxicity; increased susceptibility to infections could develop among those taking immunosuppressive drugs. Grapefruit juice can even enhance your response to caffeine, resulting in nervousness and over-stimulation.

Orange juice doesn’t appear to have these effects and neither do any other types of juice made from citrus fruits.

I had it done. I would do it again. Actually, the risks are less than the risks for wearing contacts for a 20 years.

The surgery is painless, and fast. And the give you vallium, so you’re not freaking out during the surgery.

You need to realize that you will probably not get as good of vision as you would with glasses, especially at night. But I think my vision is better than it was with contacts. There are risks and trade offs. You need to do the research and understand the issues, and make a decision based on your values. For me, it was a good choice.

Laser Eye Surgery/Lasik problem -maybe.Concerned?

I had Lasik Vision Correction 3 weeks ago. I had to go & buy reading glasses to see far & near. Some days I don’t even need them but 4 out of 5 times I need them by the end of each day & my eyes are exhausted. The surgeon has done 10′s of thousands of the surgeries & has a 0% re-do rate. All of these questions should be asked of the office that did your procedures. Only the Doctor that you saw knows what you had done and what you should be able to expect. none of us know your case. to my knowledge none of us are MD doctors. You need to call the office where you got your surgery.

Basically the doctor uses a laser to cut the exterior of the eye somewhat like slices of a pie. When the these cuts heal, they shrink the surface of the eye to be tighter thus changing the viewing screen to a flatter surface. This may be a bad description but it is the best way I can explain. The pros are that you may have your vision corrected to even 20/20 and not require glasses or contacts. The cons are that in some cases it does not work. It is a very common procedure now and probably worth it for you if your vision is poor enough to require a heavy correction. Consult with the doctor.

I would just call and explain that you have changed your mind about having the surgery because you aren’t sure about the possible complications. I’m sure it isn’t the first time they have heard that.

The average of a good doctor could be like 1500-3000 dollars for each eye.

What you should think first apart from the money, is the side effects.

The most common After Lasik is DES (Dry Eyes Syndrome) due to the flap which is cut and doesn’t heal, so that it creates DES. It has been also reported that most people get halos and have photophobia. The percentages though for these are really low.

Usually, after few hours after LASIK, the pain is gone, you can see clearly and you only feel dryness and discomfort. If you get the surgery, the best is to stay 1 week at home and go to your eye doctors for check-ups after 1 day, 1 week, 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year.

Has anyone had the Lasek Eye Surgery for astigmatism? I’m looking to have this done for the following measurements Right eye:- SPH -1.75 CYL -2.75, Left eye:- SPH -2.25 CYL -3.75. I have been advised that my astigmatism has changed and that I need to wait until it is stable before I can have the surgery. I am a little concerned as after reading some posts on the internet some people have had laser eye surgery for astigmastism, but have had to go back to wearing glasses years later due to their astigmatism coming back.

I’d reccomend that you have a look at the following website:

It contains information on all the laser eye surgery providers in the UK as well as plenty of information from and for people like yourself who are about to engage in treatment. This is a good place to get further feedback about how LASEK works, what the alternatives are (All Laser Trans-Epithelial treatment, PRK etc).

If you do one thing, research your treatment very well. Once you have treatment done, you cannot reverse it.

Be weary of promises to improve your vision (this is not possible with laser) with various fancy sounding techniques (with the added increase in cost). Often you are quoted a particular price and treatment only for the surgeon to suggest a better/more suitable (and much more expensive) form of treatment 5 minutes before you are due to have laser.

You certainly want to have treatment done with the people/company that you trust the most. The above website has good information, read some of the forums about surgeons / companies etc and perhaps ask people on the site for further information about the particular individuals that are to carry out your treatment.
