Extreme near-sightedness help?

ok so, I’m 15 and my vision is TERRIBLE! I have not heard of a person who’s vision is worse than me. My eyesight is around -5.50 in both eyes. I really hate being so dependent on contacts and glasses. I want to do Lasik Eye Surgery but I’m too young. Can I have LASIK if I get my parent’s permission? Also, is there a point where your vision is too bad for surgery to help? My eyesight is getting worse and worse and I’m afraid I’ll eventually go blind if I don’t do something. I’m sooo embarresed by my near-sightedness, I feel blind. Help please?

You have moderate myopia. Lots of people have worse myopia than you.

You should be at least 18 and have not had an increase in myopia for two years to have LASIK. LASIK works up to about -7.00 to -9.00 depending on corneal thickness.

You cannot go blind from needing glasses, blindness is caused by disease or trauma.

Chill. There is no reason to be embarrassed. Be thankful that you can see well with glasses.

Laser Lasik Eye Surgery long term effects?

I have been thinking about going for Laser Eye Surgery, my vision is like 4 and 4.50. I used to wear contacts all the time, until my eyes got very dry and now I can’t even wear a contact in my right eye – it hurts when I am taking it out and the contact stuck to my eye. I would like to know if there are any long term bad effects after Laser eye surgery, e.g. will my vision worsen in the future as I’m now only 24, and what happens if I suffer cataracts when I’m old? Am I still able to have another eye surgery to fix that problem? Also, has anyone had such a problem with contacts being stuck to the eye and being very painful to remove?? I mentioned it to my optometrist and she said my right eye was severely dry. But even after resting my eyes by not wearing contacts & wearing only glasses for a few months, when I tried wearing my contacts again, I could hardly wear it in my right eye for more than 1 hr.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

What is your experience with Lasik Eye Surgery?

Have you had Lasik?? What did it feel like? Were you totally comfortable? I’m 24 and have worn glasses since I was 17. I have been a nut when it comes to doing anything with my eyes. When I was about 5 I had sand tossed in my eye and I had to be admitted into the hospital with a scratched cornea. Ever since then I freak out doing anything with my eyes — drops, contacts, or even seeing someone else put drops or contacts. Only about a year ago have I been able to handle contacts but I still only put them in for special occasions. I would absolutely love not to have to wear glasses/contacts and I know my vision is worsening. Please tell me what you have experienced with Lasik. I want blade less and I would need a valium!! Would they supply this? I’m so worried, any input would be great!

It looks really painful on camera and as someone who might benefit from it, lasik looks scary, but the results are real and prove success or else the surgery wouldn’t be available to the public!

how many times can I have Lasik Surgery on my eyes?

Minimum corneal thickness for a retreatment is 250 microns.

There are other options if your cornea is too thin later on – such as Refractive Lens Exchange (same as cataract surgery which they take the natural lens out and replace it with an artificial lens which can see close up and distance) or Visian Implantable Collamer Lens (contact lens implanted in the eye permanently to help with distance vision.) As your surgeon about these options or get a 2nd opinion if you’re not too sure about doing LASIK again.

Considering the Navy. 82 on ASVAB. Looking at DC or QM. Have Bachelors. Enlisted or Officer?

My vision is crap but after basic i am considering lasik. My ?s are along the lines of what can i expect in these positions? How much crap work goes along with the territory? In your opinion what is the worst part about RTC? and why? How difficult will it be for me to recieve a commission via the enlisted route? What are potential jobs after 5 yr enlistment with these positions? any other tidbits unrelated to these ?s would be stellar!!! Thanks a ton ya’ll

FIrst of all, unless you want to spend at least 1/2 your enlistment on the ocean, I wouldnt join the Navy. It’s the worst service for relationships because they are almost always long distance.

QM or quartermasters, is like an office supply room. All you do is hand out gear and supplies to people, paperwork and inventory. Makes for a boring 5 years, but fairly easy duty.

If you have a Bachelors, I wouldnt even consider enlisted.
GO FOR OFFICER. The salary/pay, quarters(rooms/lodging) are so much better and you don’t have to put up with all the little hassles like formations and cleaning the barracks in your spare time. It is a lot harder to work your way up from enlisted to officer so I would enlist as an officer. You already have the degree so why settle for less. If the navy wont give it to you, try another branch.
The army will always give you a commission with a 4 year degree.

And as an officer you are more likely to get jobs in management when you get out.

What is Laser Eye Surgery ?

Laser eye surgery is the most commonly practiced procedure to correct vision problems caused by refractive errors, including myopia (near-sightedness), hyperopia (far-sightedness) and astigmatism (distorted vision when looking at objects at any distance). More recently, laser eye surgery has also been used to correct presbyopia (the inability to focus on nearby objects), which is part of normal aging and can be corrected by using reading glasses.

All of these conditions are caused by problems with the way the eye focuses an image on the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of the eye. A large part of the eye’s ability to focus depends on the shape of the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye…

Common Laser Procedures

PRK : - The surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) with a surgical blade or blunt instrument. The laser beam, guided by a computer, is then used to vaporize tiny amounts of tissue under the surface of the cornea. The procedure removes just enough tissue to reshape the cornea in a way that corrects vision. The initial healing process is complete in about a week.

LASIK : – This surgery is more complicated. The surgeon first cuts a flap in the cornea with a very sharp blade or laser, and then lifts it and uses a computer-guided laser to remove calculated amounts of tissue from the inside layers of the cornea. Afterwards, the flap is put back and the eye heals more quickly than with PRK.

LASEK : - This is a variation of Prk And Lasik. The surgeon cuts the outer layer of the cornea (epithelium) with a fine blade, and uses alcohol to loosen and lift it in a single layer. The laser beam is then directed at tissue under the epithelium, as with PRK. When the laser procedure is finished, the epithelium is put back in place.

Epi-LASIK : - This is a modified LASEK in which the outer layer of the cornea is removed with a mechanical device using a blunt, rather than a sharp blade.
