Why Custom Lasik?

Traditional Lasik has been a breakthrough in vision-improving technology, providing freedom from corrective lenses for millions of people. Dr. Chris Hummel of Hummel Eye Associates in Oklahoma City has been offering it ever since it was approved by the FDA in 1999.

For some patients, Custom LASIK delivers a more precise procedure than traditional LASIK, both in diagnosis and treatment. Dr. Hummel uses the VISX Advanced CustomVue system, including iris registration.

Your eyes are unique

They say that your eyes are as unique as your fingerprints. Custom LASIK has the advantage of being tailored to your individual eyes, rather than being a one-size-fits-all approach. This means it makes very specific, very accurate adjustments to your vision, so that you can see your best.

Custom LASIK advantages

• Greater chance of achieving 20/20 vision or better

• Improved night vision

• Less risk of reduced visual quality

• Less risk of reduced best corrected vision

Higher order aberrations

Higher order aberrations are the fine flaws in your eyes. They can diminish the quality of your vision, but the results do not show up in standard vision tests. Sometimes higher order aberrations are so slight that you do not even notice their effects.

Some examples are:

• Poor night vision because of lowered contrast sensitivity

• Double vision

• Halos around light sources

• Starbursts – scattered light around light sources

The lower order aberrations are well-known: myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism (blurriness at all distances). These three conditions are the ones treated by all forms of LASIK.

Traditional LASIK can occasionally exacerbate the visual disturbances caused by higher order aberrations, causing you to lose visual quality as you gain visual acuity.

Custom LASIK allows us to detect and correct higher order aberrations, improving more than just visual acuity, but the quality of your vision as well. Many people experience enhanced night vision due to these subtle corrections.

Alternatives

Custom LASIK may sound ideal, but it is not necessary for everyone. Even if you are not a good candidate for Custom LASIK, you may still be able to achieve excellent vision and freedom from corrective lenses, through other procedures such as traditional LASIK or Refractive Lens Exchange. Ask Dr. Hummel if CustomVue is right for you.

no, laser surgery would not be permitted if this was the case. sometimes regression or under treatment can occur which will cause you to have blurry vision. If you go to a reputable laser company they will usually offer a one time touch up. Also when you age your eyes change shape resulting in the need for reading glasses but this would likely occur without the surgery depending on your prescription. Another common symptom, is night glare but i get that even from just wearing corrective lenses.
