ONe possible side effect that I know of is it can in some cases cause severe aberrations, which can distort the way your eyes see light. It apparently can make night driving almost impossible, depending on it's severity. We have a patient at my office that had the laser corrective surgery and suffered from this side effect, and he can't drive at night because the glare from oncoming headlights is so extreme. But I don't know how often or in how many cases this occurs.
