Laser Eye Surgery Questions please ?!?

are you awake for laser eye surgery ?
if not, is it painful ?
how old do you have to be ?

I had my laser surgery as soon as I turned 21 as this was the minimum age over here (in Ireland). But they usually recommend that your prescription has not changed at all within the previous year.

I had the LASEK procedure (LASIK is the other). LASEK is less invasive but the recovery time is longer. You ARE awake for laser eye surgery, whichever procedure you get. If you think about it; if you were asleep you’re eyes could roll back in your head, so they wouldn’t be able to do it properly.

For the LASEK procedure, they held my eyelids open. They do one at a time. This is the most uncomfortable part of the whole thing. Then they drop this alcohol solution onto your eye to loosen the cells. They brush the cells to one side. This feels weird but you are totally numbed. Then they tell you to stare ahead at the red dot. It starts blinking and makes a noise; this is the laser going in. It only lasts a few seconds, no more than 30. Then the surgeon brushes the cells back into place and moves on to the other eye. I was given a valium before this all started which relieved the butterflies in my stomach a bit. Just keep in mind that no matter how uncomfortable the procedure may be, it lasts only about 15 minutes. And as far as I was concerned, I can withstand anything for 15 minutes if it means I’ll be able to se perfectly again!

Afterwards you’re eyes are really sensitive to light and can hurt and sting a lot. I took a week off work but I could have probably done with more because looking at a computer screen was a killer. Recovery time varies with everyone though. Your eyes will be dry and they will give you a load of different types of drops (inflammatories, steroids, antibiotics, etc) to use at different intervals throughout the day.

I would totally recommend laser eye surgery to anyone, especially if you have a high prescription. It is so worth it. Hope I helped! Good luck!
