Will the Army ever give out waivers for becoming an aviator?

Do you think there’s any chance the Army might consider giving out waivers if you’ve had LASIK or PRK and are trying to become a pilot in the near future? Maybe in 3-4 years or when the economy gets better and people begin leaving the Army for civilian jobs?

Do you think it’s feasible or is having good eyesight naturally a requirement they’ll always keep?

Well, the Air Force of my country allows waivers for this. However, the I’m assuming this isn’t very high on the Army’s list of priorities as aviators are not generally the problem when it comes to recruiting. The standards right now are actually lower than usual because of the whole war-thing. If anything, they’ll get stricter as military presence in the Middle-East is reduced.

Perhaps in time they may change this policy, but don’t count on it any time soon.

Depends on what type of lasik you are talking about, Convential lasik or CustomVue. CustomVue has a lower chance of having halos or glare after, whereas a lot of people complain about glares and halos after conventional. I just had CustomVue last week and I got a booklet that gave statistics on problems that could happen (nobody has ever gone blind). All the statistics were under 3% for things such as lingering dry eye, halos, or glare. The statistic for infection after was 1%. The biggest risk most lasik docs will say is infection. But, as long as you take the eye drops and take care of your peepers when they are healing, you should be fine. As for the shooting lasers from your eyes, either ask for the "special" upgrade or roll around in some toxic waste :)

I just got Lasiks and it is the best thing I have ever done for myself. With any surgery there are risks, mostly of infection. If your take your eyedrop regularly you should be fine. the Doc should explian everything. The most common problem is seeing hallo around light at night time. I experienced it for the first week and then it cleared up but it wasn’t so bad that I could not drive.

working in an opticians not one that does laser correction and i see many complaints of dry eye halo vision (blurred vision around the edges) and loss of night vision (unable to drive with this) many need glasses again after as little as a year there is no guarantee of perfect 6/6 vision not all prescriptions can corrected. THINK CAREFULLY BEFORE YOU GO A HEAD WITH CORRECTION AND FIND OUT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE ABOUT THE COMPANY AND PERSON CARRYING OUT THE PROCEDURE (CHECK MEDICAL QUALIFICATIONS)
