Will the Marines take me if I’ve had Lasik Eye Surgery?
I’m looking to join the Marines within the next 6 months or so but I have bad vision (about 20/100 in each eye). The MOS I’m going for is something in Infantry or MP, so I know a tour in Iraq will be pretty much definite. However I’ll be damned if I take a round to the dome because I “dropped my glasses”…. how the hell would that look on my tombstone??
Anyway back on point….. I very much want to get Lasik Surgery but I don’t know if I should try to do it before or after enlisting. If I get it done too soon before enlisting will they not take me? Is it an option to get it done after basic or is that not allowed? Will having it conflict with either of the job fields I mentioned above? And yes I know I’ll have to pay for it myself.
Check with a recruiter now about it. I’m not sure of Marine regulations, but Army regs state that really the only job you aren’t allowed to have with Lasik is flying.

Dr. Maloney has a really fantastic web site that answers a lot of your questions and more. Go to maloneyvision.com and they also can refer you to a good doctor in your area as well. They are really nice people and yes it is as easy as it looks. I am not an employee of his practice, but he is friends with the Doctor I work for and we have gone in a toured his facility and watched several surgeries and it is amazing. Personally, if I could afford the surgery, I am not sure that I would do it. There are possible side effects and there is no guarantee that my vision would be perfect. I see 20/20 out of my glasses and my contacts and there is not a gaurantee in the world that they can give me that promises that with the surgery. I am still not convinced it is best for me. However, many of our patients in our office have had Dr. Maloney or one of his associates do one of the many proceedures that are available and have had wonderful results and just love how easy it was. The web site has a copy of his book online and it tells you how to find a good doctor, questions you should ask, and what you should consider before you leap into it. I hope you get good info from the site. I did.

There isn’t a set minimum age, but they will be reluctant to do it if your prescription has been changing frequently over the last few years. You have to wait until your eyes seem to be done changing, or it’ll be a waste. A friend of mine had them done at age 18, but he was wearing glasses again within a few years. He got it done again at 24 or 25 and he’s been fine since then. I’m just about 21 and my eye doctor said I could get it done now. Consult with an eye doctor to find out for sure.
