How much does Lasik/ Laser vision correction cost?

I recently won a raffle for a free laser surgery, they are sending me a certificate for $1000. I’m pretty sure that it is going to cost more than that for both eyes. I know is is more expensive the worse your vision. I have -5.15 apx. in both eyes, no Astigmitism. Can anyone tell me how much it cost you? Please no, ”… I’d guess its about $xxx…” and I’m not going to fly to India to have it done. Thanks in advance to all of you who help.
I know to research the place and check it out before I commit to anything. I’ve looked online for costs, but everything I find says I’d need a consultation. I have one scheduled with this place on July 12th, and I’d like to have an idea before going in. I just want a ball- park number from people who have had it done.

My PRK custom wavefront cost me $3400 after my vision discount. The other quotes I got in my area was $4200 and $3000. (and I totally hear ya on the India thing!!)

The Standard Lasik ranged according to the technology used, but for the broad beam technology, the price was about $1000, flying spot was $1300 and the custom without any discounts was $1900.

Actually, the expense isn’t necessarily how bad your correction is…for my surgeon, he charges by the technology used…and it’s a flat rate per technology. And for the other two surgeons I looked into they had flat rates as well, but didn’t have the different technologies available.

Some health insurance companies also have some type of “rewards” system that might help with a discount if the surgeon you go to will accept it (some companies will have a contract with that surgeon…not that it will be covered and paid for…just you’ll get a discount if you have a certain insurance).

I’d say that the $1000 certificate is a great prize! judging on my research, the US average per eye was $1200-2100…which with your prize, you’ll have at LEAST 1/3 paid for. congrats!

Is it better to wear glasses or to make Lasik Surgery?

For some problem a lot of people wear glasses i wonder why some of them don’t make any surgery like Lasik.Although it’s so successful.

I thought about Getting Lasik Surgery, but I’m still not too comfortable with it. I’m too worried that it won’t work out well. I think a lot of people look really good with glasses; I usually get mine from www.eyeglasses.com and I get a lot of compliments.

Should I Do Lasik now or wait for better safer technology?

I am in the mid 20′s consider Lasik, but i heard some side effect such as had problem in night vision, should I wait few more years maybe a safer and better technology will come out? What age should do Lasik before is too late?

What foods are good to promote healing of the eyes?

What if Lasik Surgery fails? What then?

Hi everyone,

Studies tell me that between 90 and 95% of Lasik Procedures are effective. I thinking of the worse case scenario.

If the surgery is unsuccessful and vision loss or other sight problems (halos, poor night vision, etc) occurs, what happens then? Can a second surgery be performed and if so at whose expense? Or do you spend the rest of your life dealing with a bigger sight problem and kicking yourself for undergoing the procedure?

I’m thinking about the procedure and weighting the risks and benefits.

No, they do NOT wait for the flap to heal. They do it as soon as they can so that they don’t have to create a new flap! Which means after your vision has stabilized but before the flap is completely healed.

If you go to a reputable place that gives you guarantees, they will correct it for free. Some places do not have that kind of policy, so do your research. I definitely trust a place more that is willing to correct vision further for free than a place that makes you pay for it.

Intralase has truly minimized the majority of problems such as halos.

Can my eyesight be corrected?

I’ve never been able to clearly see out of my left eye. I was born with a cataract having it fixed as a baby, then I had a muscle tightened in my eye at 6, retina detachment at 9, and a tube put in at 14 due to high pressure in my eye. I can see only about a 20/400 out of that eye and 20/20 out of the other. I was wondering if LASIK or any other corrective surgery could improve my eye sight?

It is likely that if you had cataract surgery as a baby, they just removed your lens and did not replace it with another. Your eye was still growing and it would have been very difficult to make an implant work. As a result, you have never had clear vision in that eye and probably have amblyopia. The surgery that would be most appropriate would be to put a lens implant in now. However you probably still would not see well due to your amblyopia. It would also be very risky due to your glaucoma and retina detachment. Here are some things to check out to understand your condition better:

Can I wear RGP contacts?

Hi,
I have very serious astigmatism ( -4.5 in my left eye and -2.5 in my right) and absolutely no myopia nor hyperopia. Can I wear RGP (Rigid Gas Permeable) contact lenses? And will I have to get them custom made?

Yes, you should be able to wear RGP lenses with your prescription. They are not as comfortable as soft lenses but once they are fitted correctly your eyes will adapt to the sensation after a while.

Whether you will need to get them custom made depends on the shape of your cornea. If you felt your optician did not supply you with enough information on these lenses, then go to see another optician who will be able to take the relevant measurements and give you more information on the lens that you will need to be fitted with

Lasik is a high risk surgery with many complications, why would anyone get it?

You can Google for websites of people who share their experience, many of them are negative. Lasik doesn’t give vision as good as glasses but costs $4000+ and is high risk. Why Get Lasik now and not wait for better technology?

Lasik is only high risk in the hands of an unexperienced surgeon. Look at the total number of cases versus the relatively small number of bad outcomes.

$4000? That’s high. It’s not cheap, but you can find an excellent surgeon to work on both eyes for a lot left.

Memory trouble. Forgetting things ?

Very disappointed of myself. In the course of 2-3 months I have forgotten 4 pairs of sunglasses in places. I am very angry now and felt like let it out and talk to you guys about it. Do you think this is very bad? Now today it ruined my day by losing another pair. Reason I think this is happening to me is because there is no value of them to me. Meaning I was always wearing prescription glasses and then contact lenses, so after that I went to doctor and did Lasik Surgery and doc says I should protect it from the sun. Sounds like you’ve just had a lot of bad luck. But the more you have to pay to get new sunglasses, the more you will not want to forget them, the less likely you will forget them or leave them behind. Quite normal, if you ask me. Everyone tends to forget things and then remember not to forget them after it’s cost them time or money.

I once left my shaving razor at home before traveling university. I then had to spend £6 getting a new one as it would’ve cost more to travel home to pick it up.

I am getting Lasik Surgery done on Friday. Have you had this? How long was your recovery and how did you do?

I am not getting the one with the flap.
My eyesight is -4.5.

In the vast majority of cases, recovery from Lasik Eye Surgery is quick and uneventful. However, as with most all medical procedures, there are certain risks, but if you take the recommended precautions, you’ll have little to worry about.

One of the most important aspects in promoting the healing process is to avoid dry eyes. Dry eyes can act like an abrasive to the cornea and invite infection. An additional unwanted side effect of dryness is the increased tendency to want to rub your eyes.

You may want to limit reading, watching television or working at the computer for the first couple of days After Lasik eye surgery. Avoid any dusty areas or anywhere that has particulate matter in the air. Be careful when showering so that you don’t allow the stream of water to hit your eyes. Also, don’t allow soap or shampoo to enter your eyes. Avoid steam rooms and swimming pools during the healing process.

During the healing process, you may notice that your eyes are very sensitive to bright light, so be sure to wear sunglasses if you go outdoors. Complications during recovery from LASIK eye surgery are rare, but they do occur. If you notice anything questionable during your recovery period, be sure to consult with your doctor immediately.

Can Laser Eye Surgery cause a detached retina a few weeks later?

A work colleague of mine had Laser Eye Correction done recently, to correct very short sightedness. It seemed to work well. About 3 weeks later she was rushed to hospital for a detached retina. That was a month ago and her vision in that eye is terrible and getting worse. She is in some discomfort. She is very depressed. Her surgeon is being cagey about what caused it – is it just a coincidence?

With retinal detachments it is so hard to tell. Which is why the doctor was probably that way. I had bilateral retinal detachment and as a result I am now legally blind..7 surgeries later. I think that I have heard LASIK puts you more at risk for detachments because it’s a laser and a laser is trauma to the eye. I’m pretty sure the laser that was used in my surgeries has something to do with my retina damage. My doctors have no idea why my retina’s detached or why they weren’t repaired. I feel like it was an error somewhere in the operating room but I will probably never know. Good luck with your friend I hope everything turns out okay.

Has anyone had Lasik Eye Surgery?

I’ve had glasses for about 10 years now, and i’m quite comfortable with them. I’d love to move on to contacts, but my mom and dad (my dad is an opthalmologist, an eye doctor) said i should just have Lasik done. My dad is friends with one of the Top Lasik people in the country that he’ll take me to.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Has anyone gotten the surgery done? I’m wondering what it’s like, do you like it better than contacts? And did it hurt when they cut your eye open? Lol.

P.S. I don’t think it’s a very good idea, seeing as i’m only 18, but my dad says it doesn’t really matter. I mean, i believe him somewhat (since he is an eye doctor, after all), but i’m sill not sure.

I had the surgery 8 years ago and do not regret it. Your eye is completely frozen with drops and there is absolutely no pain. I had to wear clear patches at night for 2 weeks, and antibiotic eye drops for 1 week. Some people experience slight burning, irritation after the surgery. I however did not, the surgeon told me that the reason I didn’t experience any discomfort was probably due to the fact that I never wore contacts.
I think that you might still be too young. Your eye prescription needs to be stable for a few years, there is no point getting the surgery if your prescription changes on an annual basis.

Here’s the real story. Way back when laser was first beginning to be used around the world there were two major laser manufacturers in competition with each other. They were fighting over who owned the rights and therefore who got to make all the money over the lasers that were sold. Well, as they fought they both realized it was costing alot so they decided to shake hands and make a deal. What they decided was to build all their lasers with the need for a card (that could only be supplied by the manufacturer to be used ONE time) in order to fire the laser. As I recall, they charge about $250 or so (can’t remember exactly) for the card. Then the two companies split the $250 dollars. So, before your doctor even fires the laser he is already $250 in the hole per eye. Some places have tried to get around this fee by purchasing “gray market” lasers that have come through sources other than these manufacturers.

Now, every time your surgeon fires his laser he uses about $200 worth of gases necessary to fire the laser per eye. Now, the surgeon has to pay for the laser itself. Lasers run about $500,000 or so (unless you lease the laser from the manufacturer and then you have to pay a lease fee for using the laser). Now, the surgeon has to pay for the facility and the staff to provide the best in care. So, start adding it up.

1) $250 for the card
2) $200 for the gas
3) Monthly cost of debt for the laser, facility, and staff.
4) Almost forgot — MALPRACTICE INSURANCE!!!!!!!!

There ya go. It ain’t cheap to provide this type of care. If you want the best in laser and service 1) pre op exam 2) laser vision correction 3) one year of follow up care with free enhancements if needed 4) life time commitment to repeat laser if needed for a lifetime at no charge (this is what I feel is the highest level of care) it CANNOT be cheap. A laser facility simply can’t stay in business if they charge less than about $1400 to $1500 per eye. If you find a place is charging dramatically less than this it means they are taking SOMETHING away from you to get the reduced fee. They do it by decreasing their SERVICES (one place I know of was only including a one day and one week follow up visit) such as shortened followup care or no free enhancements or no life time commitment. Also, be wary of facilities that aggressively promote a VERY low fee. These are bait and switch operations. They just want to get you in the door so they can manipulate you into a higher price. Once you find out exactly what you get for that $299 to $699 per eye, they KNOW that you can be easily manipulated to trade up. If you resist their pressure they will do the laser for the lower fee but if you need ANYTHING other than the laser and a couple of post op visits you will pay through the nose for any future services. It will be like “Don’t call us unless you’re ready to get your bill fold out big time.” Hope this helped.

Regarding Lasik Surgery, is Custom Wavefront Lasik worth $800 more than Flying Spot Technology?

If someone could provide an educated opinion on the topic I’d appreciate it. My Lasik surgeon recommended either the Bausch & Lomb 217Z (flying spot) or the Bausch & Lomb Zyoptix (custom wavefront). When I search for articles on the web, all I get are articles promoting one or the other, but I cant find a comparison. It seems like the Zypotix comes higher recommended but is it worth an extra $800? Or is the improvement between custom wavefront over flying spot worth it?

They all give the same results. The difference in the doctor you choose is more important than that difference in the available technologies.

Lasik…Must have a second corrective procedure. Anyone else?

I had Lasik Surgery about 6 months ago and must have it done again because one eye was not corrected enough. Has anyone else had a second procedure? If so, was the second one satisfactory? Should I demand a discount?

The likelihood of needing a second procedure, the risks involved, and whether that would be a new contract, covered as completion of the first treatment, or somewhere in-between, should have been made very clear in the comprehensive paperwork your should have gone through (and signed) before the first procedure.

Something is slightly off, even if it’s only poor communication, if you weren’t clear on this before you had the first Lasik.

Do you still have a copy of the waivers and information sheets you were given?

A second procedure has no greater risk than the first one, assuming there is still adequate corneal thickness with which to work.

What is the minium age for Lasik?

The FDA’s ( http://www.fda.gov/cdrh/LASIK/when.htm ) site says “Currently, no lasers are approved for LASIK on persons under the age of 18. ” However, several local doctors have my son approved for Lasik and he’s 14… So are the doctors doing something illegal or is the FDA’s site old?

There is no age requirement per-say. Lasik should not usually be done unless the eye itself has completely stopped growing and changing shape– this usually means that your son would have to have very little or no change in his prescription for two years straight.

I would not advise getting Lasik at an early age because if done too early it could damage the eye or if nothing else, his eye could continue to change shape and he would just end up wearing glasses again.

Also when determining if your son is a good candidate, go to an ophthalmologist that does NOT perform Lasik– they will have a less biased opinion– not to mention, they have nothing to gain (money) from their answer.
